prayer changes things
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” (1 John 5:14 NIV).
What is Prayer?
To put it simply, prayer is talking to God. It is an act of obedience, as God has commanded us to pray. It is a way of communicating with our true Creator. It is how we ask for forgiveness, request help or healing, and share our love for God. Prayer is one of our biggest gifts and resources, yet it is often underutilized by Christians. Paired with daily devotions and reading of the Bible, prayer can bring you in closer relationship with God.
How to Pray
An easy way to pray is to use the “P-R-A-Y” model.
- P: Praise God. Thank Him for your blessings and whatever comes to mind – the beauty in nature, your family, your salvation, etc.
- R: Repent. Admit your sins to God and ask for forgiveness.
- A: Ask. Share your needs and requests with God, whatever they may be.
- Y: Yield. Spend time hearing what God has to say to you. Ask Him to reveal this to you.
The Bible provides many verses regarding prayer. The Lord’s Prayer provides us with an example of prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4: “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'”
To get started, try taking a few minutes each day to talk to Jesus. Don’t worry about using a special format or thee and thou language – just talk to Him. Tell Him how you feel, what you’re worried about, what your grateful for, or anything else. The important thing is learning to have a conversation with God. You’ll find it much easier than you thought.
Once you have a prayer habit formed, start looking for ways to enhance your prayer time. Try pairing prayer reading your Bible, start a devotional about prayer or getting closer to God, listen to Christian music to help set the right atmosphere.
